The University of Florida Marine Animal Rescue Program (UF MAR) Stranding Biologist II (SBII), along with the other UF Marine Animal Rescue stranding biologist partners in responding to reports of sick, injured, or deceased marine mammals and sea turtles in Levy, Taylor, and Dixie counties with the NMFS Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program in NOAA (MMHSRP). This program is part of the Southeast region of the national program.  The Stranding Biologist are both stationed in in the Lower Suwanee National Wildlife Refuge in Chiefland, FL, and interact professionally with the supervisor of the refuge and refuge personnel. The Stranding Biologist II (SBII) helps to train the new biologist and to assist their adaption to the program’s activity, principles, and partners. The UFMAR SBII position is designed to provide improved organization, taking additional responsibility for the program in the response and recovery of carcasses of cetaceans, manatees, and sea turtles for scientific improvement of the causes of stranding. The SBII is responsible for communicating and coordinating assistance with the Southeast stranding network and assisting with direct interaction working with NMFS and FWC for live animal stabilization, rescue, and transport with the PI and veterinarians involved. The SB II also works in partnership with the UF/IFAS Nature Coast Biological Station and its director, the Cedar Key Dolphin Project, the CMA stranding program, Emerald Coast and GulfWorld stranding programs that are in proximity both north and south of this programs Gulf of Mexico assigned counties. In addition to Levy, Dixie, and Taylor County duties the Stranding Biologist II also coordinates the request for assistance and facilitates UFMAR’s rescue activity for response needs in the regional program.
