Job Description:

Perform audits and radiological surveys of clinical areas that utilize radioactive materials and radiation producing machines to ensure that they comply with all radiation safety requirements. 

Perform radiation safety inspections of laboratories, report findings, advise, and follows up on corrective actions. Perform sealed source leak tests, analyze samples, and report results.

Educate therapy outpatients and their families to ensure that they comply with all radiation safety requirements.

Provide assistance to the research laser safety program.  Includes performing and documenting inventories of lasers and laser systems, hazard evaluations and risk assessments. Implement appropriate safety controls, including engineering controls, procedural controls and other workplace practices, training, signage, and personal protective equipment. Investigate and document laser related incidents and accidents.

Radiation monitoring “in the field” using portable radiation detection instruments, and in the laboratory by operating radiation measuring instruments. Assist with maintaining inventories and inspections of radiation producing machines (X-ray) to assure registration and operation of devices comply with state and federal regulations.

Prepare and conduct trainings related to the principles and practices for radiation protection for clinical and research staff members and students (as needed).

Evaluate and interpret current regulation pertaining to health physics to ensure compliance.

Operates UF/state vehicles.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization. State of Florida Licensure for the practice of Medical Health Physics.

Preferred Qualifications:

EDUCATION & TRAINING:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization.

EXPERIENCE: Previous EH&S, safety or radiation safety experience, particularly in an academic setting.

KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of radiation uses, hazards, and control measures suitable for the academic environment.

SKILLS: Resourceful and creative problem solving. Customer service perspective.

ABILITIES: Effective oral and written communication suitable for a wide variety of stakeholders.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to collect field data from research environments or conduct on-site training in in these areas.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to travel off-site to UF facilities in other parts of the state.
