Job Description:

UF Information Technology (UFIT) is currently seeking an entry-level Data Engineer I to join Data Platform and Analytics – Data Engineering unit within UFIT.

Employment with UFIT provides an excellent opportunity to work with other employees dedicated and focused on understanding and interpreting the technological needs of the University of Florida’s innovative and inspirational community.

As a key contributor to the Data Engineering team within Data Platform and Analytics, you will actively engage in diverse projects; undertaking responsibilities such as implementing data pipelines, optimizing data structures, integrating datasets, developing scalable compute workloads, and improve metadata management. Under direct supervision, this role entails close collaboration with customers, business analysts, and team members. The primary focus is to understand business requirements, steering the analysis and design phases to deliver high-quality technical solutions. With a robust understanding of IT systems and capabilities, you will actively participate in and demonstrate proficiency in IT systems, development lifecycles, quality assurance/testing, and integration methodologies.

Some key responsibilities and characteristics of this position are:

  • Data design, data accuracy, data replication, data transformation, metadata, and repository creation for the data hub, which contain data repositories for all the information systems managed by UFIT
  • Troubleshoot and performance tune existing data pipelines. Make recommendations toward the development of new code or reuse/enhancement of existing code. Review processes that audit data synchronization for data corrections
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and support of the data hub and corresponding data marts, including the development of near real-time and batched data marts, star schema design, operational reporting data marts, debugging and modifying program code, managing deadlines, and ensuring quality control practices are followed

Benefits

Full-time TEAMS employees will accrue vacation leave at a rate of 6.769 hours biweekly/22 days annually and sick leave at 4 hours biweekly/13 days annually. In addition, employees are eligible for ten paid holidays each year.

Vacation-accruing TEAMS employees are eligible for four personal leave days/32 hours per year, assuming full-time status, and are intended to give the flexibility to enable units to close from December 26 to 31, when possible, determined on a unit-by-unit basis.

Expected Salary:

$61,000 – $68,000; commensurate based on education and experience. 

Minimum Requirements:

Associate’s degree; or a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of relevant experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following education, experience, and skills:

  • Understanding of data pipeline methodologies
  • Knowledge of database functionality
  • Understanding of object-based storage
  • Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to diverse situations
  • Understanding of methods and ability to grasp new concepts, acquire new ways of seeing things, and revise ways of thinking and behaving, with the understanding that this is an ongoing business necessity

This role will be based in one of our Gainesville offices and may include a hybrid schedule of 3 days in the office (Wednesday required), and 2 days remote.
