This is a 12 month non tenure-accruing position available in the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida.  This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit.  This Post Doc position will be in the Forest Ecosystem Sciences Lab and the Silva Lab at the University of Florida-Gainesville. We invite applications for a postdoctoral associate to be jointly mentored by Drs. Jason Vogel and Carlos Silva in the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences (SFFGS). The associate will investigate the linkage between pyrogenic carbon production during prescribed fire, soil carbon turnover, and remotely sensed vegetation structure in the lower coastal plain of the southeastern United States. We seek a researcher with interests in ecosystem or soil carbon cycling, fire ecology, or using LiDAR to understand vegetation structure. Researchers with a background in soil or forest science, geography / remote sensing, or biology are encouraged to apply. Desired attributes of the selected applicant include ability to complete tasks and work independently, comfort with a GIS and the R programming language, and an ability to traverse difficult terrain in subtropical heat.  The position is funded for at least two years with a starting salary of $60K / year + benefits and an annual increase commensurate with performance. The research will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Yong Zhou at Utah State University. 

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The School of Natural Resources and Environment is an interdisciplinary unit housed in IFAS and managed by several colleges on campus.  UF/IFAS employs nearly 4,500 people, which includes approximately 990 salaried faculty and 1,400 permanent support personnel located in Gainesville and throughout the state. IFAS, one of the nation’s largest agricultural and natural resources research and education organizations, is administered by a Vice President and four deans: the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Dean for Extension and Director of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service, the Dean for Research and Director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Dean for the College of Veterinary Medicine.  UF/IFAS also engages in cooperative work with Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.
