Job Description:

Experiment Modification and Implementation:

Modify and implement experiments to improve strawberry fruit quality, yield, and disease resistance using a variety of genetic and statistical methods.

Conduct experiments in the field, greenhouse, and laboratory to evaluate the performance of new strawberry varieties and breeding lines.

Supervise and coordinate the activities of staff involved in the breeding program.

Collect and maintain accurate records of experimental data, including field notes, measurements, and samples.

Data Management:

Manage datasets related to strawberry breeding, including genetic and phenotypic data.

Perform basic statistical analyses using software such as R
to identify trends and patterns in the data.

Identify and troubleshoot data quality issues and implement strategies for improving data accuracy.

Breeding Program Support:

Manage the seed germination, seedling transplanting, seedling organization, tissue collection, and DNA testing activities of the breeding program.

Coordinate with other team members to ensure the timely and effective completion of breeding activities.

Develop and maintain accurate records of seedling and plant materials, including pedigrees and trait data.

Germplasm Management:

Maintain strawberry germplasm including plant material in nurseries, fields, and greenhouses.

Participate in developing and maintaining the strawberry germplasm inventory and database.

Reports and Organizational Tasks:

Prepare regular reports and summaries of breeding program activities, including experimental results and recommendations for future experiments.

Perform other organizational tasks as needed to support the breeding program, such as purchasing supplies, ordering materials, and maintaining equipment.

Expected Salary:

55k-60k

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and three years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with one year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters of Science in plant breeding, horticultural science or a closely related field
Knowledge of and experience in plant breeding and genetics research
Knowledge of and experience in scientific methods for experimental design, data collection and statistical analysis
Supervisory capability and the ability to work independently
High organizational capability and attention to detail
