The Small Fruit Horticulture Lab at the University of Florida is recruiting a Post-Doctoral Research Associate for a project focused on blueberry photosynthetic responses at multiple biological scales. Our goal is to relate leaf, branch, and whole-plant responses to variation in photosynthetically active radiation in this woody perennial species. The research project will: 1) document the diversity of maximum leaf photosynthetic rates (Pnleaf) in a plant, 2) relate Pnleaf to branch photosynthetic rates (Pnbranch) using leaf phylotaxis and demography data, and 3) integrate Pnbranch and plant architecture data to build whole-plant photosynthesis models.

In this position, you will be expected to build/adapt tools for photosynthesis research in a woody perennial crop, collect data in growth chamber, greenhouse, and farm settings, and analyze/model data using quantitative and coding skills. The selected candidate will also present research findings in state, regional, and national scientific meetings and extension conferences, author scientific publications, and contribute to extramural funding applications. Networking, teaching, and extension opportunities will be available, depending on the candidate’s interests.

This is a 12-month, non-tenure-accruing position, available in the Horticultural Sciences Department Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This position is part of a cohort of Post-Doctoral Associates that will be hired across multiple disciplines aiming to create blueberry yield prediction models.

The Horticultural Sciences Department (http://hos.ufl.edu) is a unit within IFAS at the University of Florida and has diverse teaching, research, and extension education programs with 34 faculty in Gainesville and 26 faculty at various Research and Education Centers throughout the state. The Horticultural Sciences Department is currently ranked top 9 in the center for world university rankings.

The Small Fruit Horticulture Lab (www.nunez-lab.com) is a lab within the Horticultural Sciences Department. The lab is led by Dr. Gerardo Nunez, who is an assistant professor of horticulture. Our research explores how abiotic stimuli and cultural practices impact horticultural crop quality, productivity, and resilience. We pursue research questions at the interface of horticulture and plant physiology focusing on berry crops grown in modern horticultural production systems. Our research aims to inform scientists, empower growers, and advance the practice of horticulture.

This position is available starting in January 2023 or as soon as a candidate is available.
