Job Description:

This position is a full-time, time-limited Core Research Facility Technician III (CRFT III) position in the Monoclonal Antibody (MA) Core in the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research (ICBR). The MA Core provides scientific resources for the production, purification, and applications of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies.  The CRFT IIII will be involved in all aspects of monoclonal antibody production in mice including customer consultations, rodent immunization and handling, ELISAs, mammalian cell culture and protein affinity chromatography. Additional responsibilities include the maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges and microplate readers, and cryogenic freezers. The incumbent must be detail-oriented and customer service oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency in MS Office Suite is desired with the ability to follow oral and written instructions/protocols, and effective time management and planning.

  • Perform affinity chromatography for monoclonal/polyclonal antibody purification. Develop and optimize purification methods.  Analyze quality, quantity, and activity of purified antibody. Aliquot sterile culture media and chemical reagents. Culture and maintain hybridoma and recombinant antibody cell lines.
  • Develop and perform biochemical assays (e.g., ELISA and western blot). Analyze experimental data. Keep legible, accurate and complete records.
  • Rodent handling and non-surgical procedures for the purpose of generating unique antibody-producing hybridoma cell lines.
  • Serve as a contact for REES equipment alarms after hours, weekends, and holidays, including troubleshooting equipment malfunctions during nonbusiness hours. Perform routine lab maintenance maintaining cryogenic freezers, moving liquid nitrogen (300 lbs.) and carbon dioxide (145 lbs.) cylinders, autoclaving waste, washing labware, preparing lab solutions, and care and decontamination of cell culture incubators.
  • Plan, organize and carry out assigned lab and administrative tasks. Present data and generate electronic notes during lab meetings. Manage projects and communicate frequently with each client. Enter service requests using the CrossLab (iLab) system. Perform intake functions such as receiving and logging samples or requests for services. Ensure that timely progress is made on all assigned projects.
  • Maintain information on each new hybridoma cell line and storage locations using an electronic inventory system. Periodically purge un-cloned hybridoma cell lines from cryo-storage.
  • Other duties assigned such as maintaining chemical inventory and managing chemical waste pickup. Complete monthly hazardous waste checklist. Acting instructor of Mammalian Cell Culture Workshop.
Expected Salary:

$45,000 - $46,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

BA/BS in related scientific field required with hands-on experience in basic laboratory and scientific methods. Optionally, 4 years of experience in science related field with at least 3 years in core specific applications. Research-based experience preferred. Core or technology specific licensure and/or certifications where applicable. Additionally yearly certificate and compliance training if required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Research-based experience in rodent handling, mammalian tissue and cell culture, ELISA and Western blotting, and other basic chemistry and biochemistry laboratory method skills
