Job Description:

The Department of Emergency Medicine is recruiting an experienced and motivated physician leader to join our faculty as Medical Director for an inpatient Intensive Care Unit in a rapidly growing academic community hospital setting.   This non-tenured position sits on the department leadership team and reports directly to the Department Chair. 

In this role, the ideal candidate is a visionary and distinguished academic and clinical physician with an excellent record of accomplishments in clinical care, education, and service, who has demonstrated strong leadership skills and a track record of collaboration. The successful candidate will combine exceptional clinical acumen with excellent communication skills and emotional intelligence.  Dedication to education and mentorship in the clinical environment are also important. 

The successful candidate will provide oversight, direction and leadership for the 24 bed Intensive Care Unit at UF Health Jacksonville North, in Jacksonville Florida.   UF Health North is a 162-bed community hospital with a 34 bed Emergency Department, comprehensive radiology and laboratory services, and consultation availability from all University of Florida specialty and sub-specialty services.   Annual admissions exceed 9,000 and are rising, with over 49,000 ER visits and 5,000 outpatient surgeries in the most recent year.  Open since 2015, UF Health North serves as the sole all-encompassing medical facility in its area. Our growth trajectory reflects the surging population growth occurring in Northeast Florida. 

This position has direct oversight of the operation of the Intensive Care Unit and is responsible for coordination with nursing, pharmacy, case management and IT.    The medical director is responsible for developing and implementing policies to ensure that the ICU operates within budget and ensures quality care to patients. They are expected to work collaboratively with other services and develop efficient, processes for admission, step-down and discharge.  The Medical Director is a full-time appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine, with approximately 80% clinical and 20% administrative duties. 

Responsibilities include the development and implementation of clinical policies, ensuring compliance with regulations, analysis of performance metrics, and improving service delivery and patient outcomes.  This role requires the successful candidate to have:

  • Prior management or leadership experience in an intensive care unit environment..
  • Experience with hospital operations, particularly in community or academic public health systems. 
  • Experience working with senior health system leaders and stakeholders.
  • Successful demonstration of operational improvements in intensive care.
  • Experience in managing teams and projects successfully.
  • Knowledge of material and pharmaceutical supply chains, capital budgeting and coordination of ancillary service support

Expected Salary:

Academic appointment will commensurate with training and level of experience; benefits are excellent.

Minimum Requirements:

Candidates must have a MD/DO and be board eligible or certified in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.

Preferred Qualifications:

Fellowship training in Critical Care Medicine
