This job requires routine and non-routine procedures as requested by various authorities including the immediate supervisor, veterinarians, research investigators, or experimental protocol. The work is performed under direct supervision. This position is responsible for carrying out the Animal Care Services’ (ACS) directives and SOPs as governed by the Animal Welfare Act and all applicable rules and regulations. Provides basic animal husbandry to a variety of species being used for biomedical research. This includes changing cages, feeding, watering, weighing animals, restraining animals, and ensuring housing and environmental compliance with the “NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”. Houses and exchanges animals in a systematic manner which maintains identity and prevents mislabeling of research animals. Emphasis is placed on maintaining genetic background or genetic lineage, adequate separation, disease control, and animal identity. Aseptic procedures are used as required. Sterilizes/disinfects/sanitizes caging, equipment, and animal holding facilities. Maintains animal records such as USDA records, clinical records, cage cards, and ensuring accuracy of census records, weekly census scans, etc. Makes gross observations of animal health and report findings daily by completing and submitting health check forms. To properly assess an animal’s health, the technician must carefully observe and understand animal behavior which may be species specific. Non-human primates, dogs, and cats used in biomedical research require proper environmental enrichment. Euthanizes rodents under supervision using carbon dioxide.

This position requires excellent organizational, record keeping skills, interpersonal and communication skills. This person will be responsible for maintaining accurate documentation of breeding logs, sanitation logs, equipment service logs and autoclave logs.
