Job Description:
  • Oversee daily operation of the Florida Extension Plant Diagnostic Clinic. Provide customer support (English & Spanish) for plant disease and insect sample submission. Dissect plant tissues and prepare samples for study. Pre-pare laboratory specimens and cultures for experimentation, including preparation of complex select media for isolation of pathogens. Prepare microscopic slides and measures morphological characteristics. Conduct routine transfers of fungal and bacterial cultures including single spore isolates. Performs standard lab tests and analyses including ELISA, PCR, cloning and sequencing. Conduct laboratory experiments, record data and prepare laboratory re-ports.
  • Responsible for daily organization of the laboratory. Research and evaluate new products for disease management.  Develop laboratory procedures and assist with the development and testing of diagnostic assays and other research initiatives.  Maintains the Pclinic database for routine clinic samples. Updating and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and inventory for the diagnostic clinic and research program.

  • Supervision of student interns and graduate students. Operate and train others on a variety of lab equipment, lab methods and procedures. Work with budgets and maintain all lab equipment and inventory for all lab equipment, supplies, and chemicals including pesticides. Review research procedures and their impact on research goals. 
  • Ensure compliance with hazardous waste disposal for pesticides/chemicals. Perform routine literature reviews pertinent to the research area. Orders supplies for the diagnostic clinic and research program.
  • Consult with other research colleagues regarding laboratory procedures and experiments.
Advertised Salary:

$33,237.17-$35,000 (commensurate with education and experience) 

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience. Appropriate college course work may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Valid Florida Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to speak Spanish
  • Experience in plant pathology (through course work, or work experience)
  • Experience in customer service
