Job Description:

[50%] PATIENT CARE. Provide clinical general dentistry chairside assisting student dentists. Maintain optimal clinic infection control standards (Expanded Functions Duties Auxiliary (EFDA) and Radiology included). Under a licensed dentist's indirect supervision, place/expose dental radiographs, place matrix retainers, place medicaments in preparations, fabricate/deliver provisional restorations, monitor the delivery of nitrous oxide sedations, take/record vital signs, polish clinical crowns, and deliver topical fluoride treatments. Help guide/teach pre-doctoral dental students as they develop these skills.

[25%] STUDENT SUPPORT. Procure the required instrument kits for each clinic session and keep precise accounting of student use of instruments for instrument leasing purposes. Maintain optimal working order of clinic equipment. Interact effectively with Dental Maintenance to insure clinic is ready for use by student dentists daily. Manage infection control survey daily to ensure compliance with clinic cleanliness standards and correct deficiencies as they occur (e.g., clean chairs, counters, sinks, etc.). Provide reinforcement for infection control standards through leading by example, giving direction (as needed) to students for proper adherence to infection control standards, and utilizing the infection control variance forms (as needed) when student dentists requires correction in infection control practices. Assist dental assisting supervisor for teams with organizing chairside assistance for student dentist utilizing (1st) team pre-doctoral student dentists (when available), (2nd) Santa Fe College Dental Programs students (when available), and (3rd) authorized Shands volunteer assistants (when available). Provide support with laboratory case management (as needed).

[5%] STUDENT/PATIENT CLINIC SCHEDULING. Assist treatment coordinators and team leaders with morning huddles. Assist teams with managing the daily clinic schedule to help ensure every clinic chair is filled with patients throughout the clinic session, providing patients with timely and appropriate care, and students with clinical experiences.

[5%] CARE GROUP DUTIES. Actively participate in, and provide feedback during, patient care coordinator meetings every two weeks with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. Provide coverage for coordinator in his/her absence.

[5%] CLINIC INVENTORY. Assist with managing the clinical supplies inventory for the assigned clinical care group (22-chair clinic). Maintain adequate stock of daily clinic supplies.

[5%] OTHER. Perform other duties (as assigned).

[3%] SURVEYING. Distribute survey forms, either UFCD or American Dental Association (ADA) related, to patients, students, and/or faculty members.  Collect and process surveys. Collect data and prepare reports for UFCD Quality Assurance & Compliance (QA&C).

[2%] GENERAL. Proctor clinical examinations (mock board examinations) two times per year. Participate in UFCD's quality assurance process. Perform rotating reception and mail duties. Perform chart locker audits and other related duties.  Actively participate in, and provide feedback during, staff meetings.

Advertised Salary:

$12.00 - $14.00 per hour, commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent and three years of relevant experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Expanded Functions Dental Auxiliary (EFDA) Certification demonstrating the successful completion of training as specified in Chapter 64B5-16, Florida Administrative Code.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) by Dental Assisting National Board (DANB)
  • Dental radiology certificate/permit
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate from American Heart Association


  • Two years of multi-practitioner dental practice experience
  • Experience handling general office equipment (facsimile machine, computer, copier, and calculator)
  • Experience with Windows and Microsoft (MS) Office (Word, Access, and Excel)


  • Information technology (IT) skills
  • General dentistry chairside assisting skills
  • Computer application skills (Outlook, Excel, Word, Access (user), AxiUm GroupWise, and Quick Recovery)
  • Skilled in using MS Windows
  • Positive "people skills"
