This is a 12-month, tenure-accruing position that will be 60% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station), 25% Extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service), and 15% Teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) located in the University of Florida's Department of Entomology and Nematology in Gainesville, Florida, within the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). The position will be academically housed, where tenure will accrue, in the Department of Entomology and Nematology within IFAS, and the nature of the assignment may change in accordance with the evolving needs of the department and IFAS.
The primary focus within the research assignment is the pollination ecology and/or conservation of non-Apis bees. The successful candidate is expected to develop an internationally recognized research program focused on the contributions of bees to ecosystem health and crop pollination systems. Potential research areas may include, but are not limited to, integrated conservation strategies for improving non-Apis bee populations, identifying and augmenting the populations of the bee pollinators important for the production of Florida specialty crops, determining how bee-provided pollination affects ecosystem services and impacts landscape structure, understanding pollination needs and pollinator ecology in urban ecosystems, species biodiversity losses, and identifying/mitigating primary stressors to populations of non-Apis bees, stressors such as pesticides, pathogens, parasites and inadequate nutrition. Fundamental to this position is seeking external funding to support the diversified research program and collaboration with existing crop-oriented research and extension faculty at UF and other state institutions.
The teaching responsibilities within the Department of Entomology and Nematology will include developing an undergraduate/graduate course in pollinator ecology/conservation and participation in revolving topic seminars in the candidate's area of expertise. The successful candidate will participate in graduate and undergraduate education: chairing and serving on graduate committees, as well as publishing results with his/her graduate students, supervising undergraduate research and developing curricula, seeking funding for developing their teaching program and learning tools, and/or publishing teaching-related scholarship. Faculty are encouraged to support and participate in the CALS Honors Program, distance education, and international education. Ultimately, the successful candidate should work to ensure a legacy of enhancing the sustainability of managed and wild bee populations in agricultural, urban and natural communities.
The Extension responsibilities will include developing and implementing an effective statewide Extension education program to support conservation efforts and stakeholders who rely on the pollination services that non-Apis bees provide. The candidate will be expected to invest in educational efforts aimed at helping growers improve crop productivity by adopting and implementing integrated crop pollination practices. Furthermore, the faculty member will work collaboratively with Master Gardeners and staff at the Florida Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services if opportunities allow and serve as a source of bee-related information for people from all backgrounds and interests in this topic. The successful candidate will be expected to work in concert with county, state, and other Extension specialists on inter-disciplinary Extension teams.
Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas – Research, Teaching, and Extension – regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.
The Department of Entomology and Nematology (http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/) has diverse teaching, research, and extension programs with 30+ faculty located on main campus in Gainesville and 30+ faculty located at 11 Research and Education Centers throughout the state.
A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in some combination of entomology, pollination ecology and/or conservation, or a closely related discipline is required. Candidates should have demonstrated skill in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.
