Faculty Leader for the Alzheimer’s Disease Institute Based Program 27300000 - HA-FIXEL INSTITUTE Main Campus (Gainesville, FL)
The University of Florida and the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases seeks a talented clinician-researcher or basic researcher to lead the comprehensive Alzheimer’s, memory and dementia program. The position will include a large endowed chair, space and a generous start-up package as well as leadership of a large existing group. This position has the potential to assume the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) directorship. The Norman Fixel Institute features a new building and campus dedicated to Alzheimer’s and related conditions. The Institute has in place a fully functioning clinic that is an “all under one roof” interdisciplinary clinical-research center. The Institute campus boasts thousands of square feet available for research. The University of Florida is also home to the McKnight Brain Institute and a free standing Neuromedicine Hospital. There is a NIH funded Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and a fellowship training program for Alzheimer’s and behavioral neurology. Neuroscience and Neurology research are consistently ranked in the top 10 in NIH Blueridge ratings. UF is also funded by a State of Florida memory disorders center grant. The leadership position will have immediate and easy collaborative access to all of the clinicians and researchers at a top 5 ranked public university. The Institute is partners with the Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases and the McKnight Brain Institute and the candidate will be granted joint appointments for access to all resources. The Marketing and Communications Specialist for the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases at UF Health leads the development and execution of strategic communication initiatives, including cost-effective, research-based, measurable communications strategies, to raise awareness of the institute, its missions, and the faculty’s clinical, research and educational advances, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the institute’s reputation among critical audiences, including the research community and the public. Conceptualizes, develops and produces content for a variety of communications channels, including the institute’s online web and social media presence, to engage critical stakeholder audiences as a member of the UF Health Communications and Fixel Institute teams. The incumbent should be a strong and versatile writer with excellent organization and creative skills who develops and produces content for a variety of programs, using traditional and multimedia strategies. The de Hemptinne Lab at the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases is seeking a motivated Medical Scientist II to join our team to support research focused on deep brain stimulation (DBS) for treating cerebellar ataxia in a novel clinical trial. The successful candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and clinicians to develop cutting-edge neuromodulation techniques. The Medical Scientist will perform work central to support new projects in the lab, collecting data, and developing data analysis pipelines to support research projects, including quality assurance analysis, statistical analysis, visualization, and interpretation. This team member will interface with several data modalities, including intracranial neurophysiology, wearable sensor data, medical imaging, behavioral task data, and clinical data. The scientist will assist with data collection, data analysis, help with study design, and contribute to developing technology to facilitate the data collection and analysis. The individual will be expected to collaborate effectively with members of the de Hemptinne Lab and other teams to facilitate program activities and resolve technical problems. The successful candidate must have strong technical skills with a background in data science/engineering in medical research and excellent written and oral communication skills. Creativity and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role.

The Oweiss lab at the University of Florida is seeking highly-motivated candidates for a postdoctoral position. The chosen candidate will conduct research focused on studying basic mechanisms of sensorimotor integration in healthy and pathological brain states and translate this knowledge to clinical applications of movement and cognitive disorders. Current projects funded by NIH include: 1- Using multi-photon microscopy and optogenetic techniques to monitor and perturb neural circuits at cellular and subcellular resolution in awake behaving mice to investigate mechanisms of neural plasticity during learning Brain Machine Interface (BMI) control, sensory- and memory-guided navigation in virtual reality environments. 2- Using chronic deep brain recording and stimulation (DBR/DBS) in human subjects to characterize neurophysiological signatures of motor control in thalamic nuclei and use these biomarkers to provide closed loop control of DBS therapy to alleviate pathological symptoms of essential tremor. The position will focus on carrying out experiments to record and analyze brain activity in the presence and absence of targeted stimulation. The candidate will receive training on data analysis and machine learning (ML) techniques to guide the optimization of stimulation parameters in animal (optogenetics) and human (electrical) studies. Candidates will publish peer-reviewed journal articles and help mentor graduate students carrying out experiments. Desirable skills may include any of the following: single and/or population neural recording, two-photon imaging/optogenetic control in awake behaving mice, or machine learning/computational neuroscience.
