Research in the principal investigator’s laboratory seeks to implement improved in vitro cell based systems to better predict human drug efficacy particularly for age-related diseases by leveraging the physiological relevance of patient-specific cells in combination with phenotypic microscopy and chemogenomic approaches to measure changes in responses to physical stressors. This scientist will utilize cellular and molecular pharmacological methods and work closely with the biomedical engineering department at UF and a millifluidic technology and implementation company to develop a tissue chip to investigate electrical stimulation of human skeletal muscle myocytes in microgravity as part of the Tissue Chips in Space Initiative funded by the National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) in partnership with the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS). This position offers an exciting opportunity to be part of the Tissue Chip for Drug Screening Program and analyze and adapt existing methodologies to create a novel microphysiological system to study the effects of microgravity on muscle cell biology.
