Job Description:

The Department of Infectious Diseases and Immunology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida invites applications for a position at the rank of Assistant Scientist (Veterinary Research) with a focus on vaccine development for embryonated chicken eggs using genetically modified and to be constructed strains of Salmonella.  and in elucidating ability of bacteria serving as adjuvants to elicit innate immunity in newly hatched chickens. We seek an imaginative, creative individual with motivation to develop these technologies and provide basic understanding of means to induce and monitor innate immunity. 

The successful candidate will have demonstrated proficiency working within Biosafety Level 2 facilities (both laboratory and animal care), experience conducting animal experiments with poultry species, including blood collection, organ procurement and processing, and delivery of live vaccines and challenge infections as well as capabilities and laboratory experiences in microbial genetics, molecular biology, immunology, and avian pathology.  There is a further expectation that the candidate will be able to plan and conduct rigorous research as well as perform relevant analysis of data obtained from all experiments and assays.  The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine is one of the world’s largest and most active academic veterinary medical centers, experience in training undergraduate students, graduate students, and technical personnel in both Biosafety Level 2 techniques and protocols in the conduct of research is expected.

Expected Salary:

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience of the candidate.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a DVM/PhD. Applicants are expected to have at least 5 years of experience conducting research with avian pathogens, an understanding of immune mechanism in poultry, and expertise in evaluating innate immune responses.
