Job Description: |
The Assistant Director plays a key role in designing and executing programs, events, and initiatives that further the mission of the Innovation Academy. This position is responsible for fostering student innovation, leading the Academy’s signature events, overseeing communications and outreach activities, supervising student staff, and cultivating partnerships across the UF campus and within the local community. The Assistant Director also serves as a primary point of contact for prospective and current students and their families, as well as for campus offices, academic departments, faculty, and business professionals at the local, state, and national levels.
Develops and manages co-curricular/experiential activities
This includes but is not limited to:
- Developing new program(s) that support IA students bring innovations (product, process or service) to reality.
- Manage all stages of the Start-Up Springs, business incubator and growing it to support as many student business as possible.
- Event Planning: Launch into IA – new student convocation, Innovation Academy Speaker Series, Catalyst – Student Innovation Showcase, Summit- IA Graduation Medallion Ceremony.
- Collaborative programming with campus partners and stakeholders in Academic Colleges, UF Innovation HUB, New Student and Family Programs, UF Libraries.
- Seek Keynote speakers.
- Seek additional opportunities for co-curricular development and learning for students through local start-up companies, research programs, service learning, and study abroad.
- Serve as supervisor and provide direction over the Innovation Academy Ambassador program.
Supervisory & Leadership
- Recruit, Train and supervise the progress of three OPS student assistant positions – Communications Coordinator, Graphic Designer and Web Developer.
- Serve as IA professional team supervisor in the absence of the Director
- Assist in recruitment of new team members
- Arrange office coverage in the absence of staff
- Organize student volunteers for departmental support needs
Oversee the departmental marketing and outreach efforts
- Develop print and digital publications and promotional materials for departmental events and initiatives.
- Oversee ongoing outreach through social media, biweekly newsletter, monthly student spotlight, departmental updates and campus and community partner engagement.
- Compile and manage the development of a departmental annual report
- Assist Graphic designer with developing event programs, signage, invitations and any supplementary material needed for brand recognition and presence.
- Provide suggestions for brand outreach and recognition.
- Recruit students for internships, departmental representations, competitions, volunteering and leadership roles.
Development of Fundraising Initiatives
- Develop opportunities for funding sources, gifts and donations for IA initiatives
- Seek parent gifts to contribute to programmatic initiatives of the department.
- Produce proposals for endowment finding for departmental initiatives
Respond to inquiries from enrolled and prospective students and the public
- Participate / Facilitate 1:1 information sessions with visiting prospective students and family
- Provide appropriate answers to referrals
- Establish and maintain files of office correspondence, documents, reports, and other records
Develop partnerships for student success via various campus & community stakeholders.
- Present to Innovation Academy stakeholders to help inform and update on current and new initiatives
- Visit IA classrooms to provide programmatic expectations for student success
- Facilitate 1:1 information sessions with visiting prospective students and family
- Establishes and maintains files of office correspondence, documents, reports, and other records.

Preferred: |
Master’s Degree in higher education, student personnel services, entrepreneurship or related field, along with two or more years of appropriate work experience (counseling, personnel management, and advisement).
- Experience in building experiential/co-curricular programs that support innovation
- Demonstrate a strong work ethic, dependability, honesty, reliability, and acute attention to detail. Superior organization and project management skills.
- The successful candidate must be able to integrate quickly and effectively into a busy team.
- Ability to contribute to a positive, productive team environment using leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to interact with stakeholders and partners from diverse backgrounds. Communicate and maintain effective relationships with staff and program partners.
- Proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPress and Adobe
- Experience with supervision of part-time staff and students.
- Strong public speaking and presentation skills
- Ability to work effectively autonomously

- Strong interest in working with college students.
