Job Description:

The Opportunity

The Student Health Care Center (SHCC) at the University of Florida is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse to join our team. As an LPN at the Student Health Care Center (SHCC) at the University of Florida (UF), the incumbent will coordinate patient flow under the direction of an RN, ensuring optimal care quality across all SHCC Teams. The incumbent will provide patient care following Nursing License standards, including providing treatments, performing procedures, administering medications, screening and counseling patients, and collecting and documenting vital signs, visual acuity, and Point-of-Care testing. Additionally, the incumbent will deliver independent patient care using SHCC's Nursing Standing Orders & Practice Protocols.

Nursing Responsibilities and Clinical Duties:

  • Meets with new and current nurses as needed to train and onboard nurses to function at a high level in Epic and SHCC Standards of Performance.
  • Facilitates patient flow in a timely, efficient and customer friendly manner.
  • Provides appropriate nursing care and treatment including starting IV’s if certified, performing wound care and dressings, administering medications.
  • Documents nursing interventions and patient responses in the patient’s medical record.
  • Performs procedure independently as indicated and/or requested by medical providers.
  • Works collaboratively with team nurses and medical assistants to oversee the clinic.
  • Orients and trains new team members. 
  • Triages patients by telephone and in person ensuring that their health problem is appropriately managed in a timely manner.
  • Reviews EPIC messages for management of the medical advice and prescription refills.
  • Provides care using SHCC RN Standing Orders and Practice Protocols

 Education and Counseling:

  • Educates and counsels patients on their specific medical illness, injury or chronic condition.
  • Promotes health and wellness through assessment strategies and ongoing education/counseling.
  • Documents interventions in patient’s health record.
  • Coordinates care of specialized patient population.

 

Coordinates and maintains adequate inventory levels of medications and medical supplies; and ensures that medical equipment is in proper working condition.

Provides professional nursing weekend coverage at least one Sunday per month or as needed. Provides professional nursing coverage to other SHCC clinics as assigned. Floats to all clinical teams as needed for training and standardization.

Participates in regular staff and team meetings, staff development programs, and other duties as assigned.

Typical Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm
  • 40 hours/week
  • Hours and days can vary according to the SHCC’s needs
  • Provides weekend coverage as assigned

Expected Salary:

$22.99- $25.86 per hour

Full-time TEAMS employees will accrue vacation leave at a rate of 6.769 hours biweekly/22 days annually and sick leave at a rate of 4 hours biweekly/13 days annually. In addition, employees are eligible for ten paid holidays each year.

Required Qualifications:

Current CPR/Basic Life Support Certification.

Preferred:
  • Two years of appropriate experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of providing patient care using sound nursing practice.
  • Knowledge of pathophysiology.
  • Knowledge of electronic health record.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Skilled in administering intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections
  • Skilled in administering oxygen
  • Skilled in starting, monitoring and administering intravenous (IV) fluids and medications, if certified
  • Skilled in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Skilled in performing wound care and Point-of-Care Testing
  • Ability to communicate efficiently in writing and verbally with patients, family members and staff
  • Ability to take pertinent histories and document in appropriate health records
  • Ability to administer medications
  • Ability to provide treatments to patient using guidelines, policies, Practice Protocols and Standing Orders
