Job Description:

The School of Art and Art History at the University of Florida, College of the Arts invites applicants for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Art History to teach undergraduate courses, including a survey of ancient through late medieval art in Europe, the Near East, and Mediterranean basin; a General Education course on protection of cultural heritage that is called “Art Crime”; and an upper-level course in field of specialty. A syllabus and materials will be provided for the survey and the Art Crime course to aid in setting up the courses, and the instructor will be able to adjust readings and case studies.

Responsibilities:  

  • Teach a 2-3 load in the Fall and Spring semesters
    • We anticipate this position will teach the following courses, although the assignment is subject to change at the discretion of the School Director:

      Fall:
    • ARH 2050, Introduction to the Principles and History of Art I
    • ARH 1030, Art Crime

      Spring:
    • ARH 2050, Introduction to the Principles and History of Art I
    • An upper-level Art History course of the instructor’s own design
    • ARH 1030, Art Crime or another course to be determined based on curricular needs
  • Supervise and mentor graduate teaching assistants
  • Conduct research appropriate to the field of Art History
  • Participate actively in our learning community
  • Participate in shared governance through service to the School, College and University

Expected Salary:

$71,000 with a comprehensive and highly competitive benefits package

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate must meet all of the following

  • PhD or ABD nearing completion in Art History or a closely related field
  • Experience teaching Art History courses in higher education as a graduate assistant or instructor of record
  • Evidence of skill in designing and facilitating academic work that advances curiosity, inclusion, open intellectual discourse, and the well-being of all in an environment of complex diversities.

 

Preferred

The successful candidate will meet some of the following:

  • PhD in Art History
  • Experience as instructor of record in higher education
  • Evidence of success as an undergraduate instructor
  • Evidence of innovative research
  • Experience supervising and mentoring teaching assistants
  • Expertise in all periods and global regions will be considered, but European art during the period 1200 to 1600 is preferred
  • Evidence of successful collaboration and collegiality with faculty, students, and staff
