Job Description:
Light Microscope Analysis :
Using established guidelines, conduct inverted confocal and dissecting light microscope work including:
Preparation of biological samples for microscopy, including sieving, pipetting, and sterilization.
Use of microscope-mounted camera hardware and software to quantify embryo fertilization counts and calculate numerical abundances.
Use of image analysis software to quantify size of larvae and juvenile urchins.
Data entry and organization into spreadsheets for further analysis.
 
Research animal maintenance:
Measurement of water chemistry parameters, such as temperature, salinity, alkalinity and pH.
Monitoring and maintaining recirculating aquaculture system life support components
Cleaning, siphoning, and conducting water changes on recirculating aquaculture systems
Maintaining microalgae cultures and feeding microalgae to sea urchin larvae
Health assessment and feeding of juvenile and broodstock sea urchins
 
General Lab Activities:
Preparation of lab equipment and supplies, such as glassware, reagents, and slides.
Cleaning and maintenance of lab equipment
Organization and storage of lab supplies and materials.
Assist in finalizing data into Excel spreadsheets, including:
Data entry and organization into spreadsheets.
Preparation of reports and presentations for project stakeholders.
 
Coordination and communication:
Participate in weekly lab meetings to receive instructions and updates.
Work closely the PI and/or postdoc to ensure quality control.
Maintain lab safety by actively communicating with supervisor and lab team.
 
Distributing cultured urchins to partners:
Live-hauling cultured sea urchins in non-commercial vehicles.
Monitoring and maintaining animal health during trips.
Overnight travel to partner facilities in south Florida and/or the Florida Keys.

Expected Salary:

Commensurate with experience and education

Minimum Requirements:

Associates degree in an appropriate area and four years of related experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. 

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related life science field. Two years of experience culturing sensitive marine invertebrates.
Knowledge of Apex or other microprocessor-based recirculating system monitoring technologies. Knowledge of Excel to finalize data into spreadsheets.

The typical work week will be 8 hours per day Sunday through Thursday. Some overnight travel will be required, and flexibility is appreciated to provide coverage in concert with the needs of other lab members.
