Job Description:

The Department of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville, is seeking two General Surgeons at the non-tenure accruing level of Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor. The Department of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville is a tertiary referral center that serves the population of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. It is home to the divisions of General Surgery/Surgical Oncology, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, Trauma/Acute Care/Critical Care, and Vascular Surgery. The Department of Surgery is poised for significant growth as we expand the elective surgical practice throughout the Northeast region. The Division of General Surgery/Surgical Oncology has nine faculty members with subspecialties of breast surgery, colon and rectal surgery, hepatopancreaticobiliary/esophageal surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery. The University of Florida is ranked 8th in the top public schools in the nation. UF College of Medicine Jacksonville is the largest of three UF colleges (Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy) on the UF Health Jacksonville campus. UF Health Jacksonville has a 150 year history of serving the community of Jacksonville and is comprised of UF Health Jacksonville, the region’s premier academic health center, a 603 bed tertiary care facility in the downtown area as well as UF Health North, a 92 bed community hospital in a growing region of North Jacksonville. UF Health Jacksonville is the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and is home to the state’s first trauma and flight program.

Jacksonville is a growing city with a beautiful climate that affords year round outside activities such as golf, biking, running, and surfing. It is the home of the Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL) and Jumbo Shrimp (Minor League Baseball). Professional golf and tennis tournaments are hosted each year in the surrounding areas. Major college sports are in close proximity, and Jacksonville hosts annually one of the most historic rivalry games in college football, the Florida-Georgia game. Broadway Theater, major concerts, and fine arts pair well with the growing culinary scene. 

Major responsibilities include building an elective general surgery practice as well as providing education of medical students and residents and participating in research. Candidate will join an extremely diverse academic general surgery practice inclusive of growing an advanced GI/MIS, endoscopic, and oncologic program. 

This position will report to the Chief of General Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville. Every faculty member in the department will have a mentoring team assigned to them and participate in the department wide faculty development program.

The following is a general description of duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide and maintain a high level of quality in-patient intermediate care services in all aspects of General Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Provide clinical teaching of trainees in General Surgery and participate in the educational program.
  • Be responsible for excellent communication with primary care physicians.
  • Assist in marketing the General Surgery Programs to community physicians and managed care organizations.
  • Participate in monthly division meetings, administrative functions and institutional committees as requested.

Minimum Requirements:

We are seeking a candidate with broad clinical experience in general surgery with a particular interest in abdominal wall reconstruction, hernia repair, gallbladder disease, and foregut surgery. The candidate must be MD or DO, Board Certified/Eligible in General Surgery with experience in all aspects of the evaluation and treatment including minimally invasive approaches of robotic and laparoscopic surgery.
