Job Description:

The Office of Strategic Communications & Marketing is accepting applications for a Public Information Officer. This position is responsible to the Assistant Vice President for Communications for developing strategies to maximize national publicity and assisting with flow of information about the University of Florida to various media and publics, particularly with print, online, broadcast, and social media.

The duties include:

The successful incumbent will pitch stories to state, national and international media that contribute to raising UF’s stature as one of the nation’s leading public research universities on the national stage and support our top-five position. Stories would include, but are not limited to, highlighting research and researchers, faculty and scholarship, innovation, rankings, outcomes measures, student outcomes, impressive alumni, etc. Story pitches can be originated by SCM but also come from other campus units, such as UF Health, engineering, etc. Outcomes and results will be measured in terms of audience reached and stature of media outlet in which the successful pitch appears, faculty expert growth, thought leadership reputation. May also work with national print and online media. 

In collaboration with the Executive Director of Integrated Communication, this position will help to create compelling visual stories that would be of interest to state, national and international media and, as above, contribute to maintaining UF’s top-five stature. Where possible, stories should be adaptable to, and make use of, all platforms—print, video, social media, etc. – with the goal of reaching and engaging the widest possible audience.

The incumbent is responsible to develop and cultivate relationships with state, national and international media, including visits to media markets of strategic importance to the university.

Expected Salary:

Commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in an appropriate area and six years of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and eight years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Must be able to work well with the media as well as a variety of internal and external publics. Should have highly developed communication skills, with special expertise in broadcast media, social media, and production. Should have extensive knowledge of the operations and activities of the University of Florida and be able to recognize and relate events and information that need to be disseminated. Should be able to work on a variety of projects at one time and respond well to pressure situations.
