This position will be expected to use their expertise in insect toxicology, molecular biology and biochemistry to develop the most appropriate methods for conducting toxicological and molecular studies on the interactions of a hemipteran insect vector with a bacterial phytopathogen through a better understanding of pathogen transmission and pathology in citrus host plants. The position will develop testable hypotheses, create and research plan, and following approval from the supervisor. The position will be directly involved in carrying out the experiments to test the hypotheses developed including setup of experiments, data collection, data analysis, and provide summaries of results for use in presentations and publications. The objectives will be focused in the basic/apply studies of plant diseases (Zebra chip in potatoes and Huanglongbing in citrus) caused by bacterial pathogens transmitted by vectors, with the final purpose of reducing the socioeconomic impact, delivering sustainable management solutions directly to growers.
The candidate in this position will also be responsible for 1) Determining the influence of citrus vegetative growth in the likelihood of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) detection in mature leaves; 2) Investigating the effect Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) herbivore in the disruption of Salicylic acid homeostasis sweet orange; 3) defining the mechanism of vitellogenesis and spermatogenesis in ACP; 4) elucidating whether ACP adult color morph possess a genetic component
This position will 5) develop rotation strategies to suppress the evolution of insecticide resistance in ACP populations 6) identify the mechanism of insecticide resistance occurring in field populations of insects in Florida; 7) search for strategies to reduce the insecticide resistance, and 8) evaluate the potential risk of resistance development in citrus groves where huanglongbing is widespread
Identification of extramural funding sources as well as the principle writing, editing and submission of grants. Preparation of budgets for grants. Revision of grants and manuscripts after peer review. Writing and review of manuscripts submitted for publication.

Doctoral degree in entomology, toxicology, biology, or a closely related field and eight years of experience in the field or in a related area; or master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and eleven years of experience in the field or in a related area; or bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and thirteen years of experience in the field or in a related area.
A PhD degree with preference in Entomology with significant experience in Toxicology of Insects and Insect Biochemistry
Highly prefer, candidates have a strong working knowledge and experience in 1) protocols for RNA extraction; 2) toxicological assays for developing LD/LC50s; 3) analysis of the function of secondary metabolites, analysis of genes involved in secondary metabolites biosynthetic pathways; 4) analysis of transcriptome datasets from insect vectors with and without associated pathogens; 5) study and design dsRNA probes to control different aspects of reproduction and physiology in Hemiptera; 6) analysis of exogenous applications of insect growth regulators (Juvenile hormone analog and 20-hydroxyecdysone) to determine their gene expression profiles in vitellogenesis of Hemiptera; 7) interactions occurring in the of the Asian citrus psyllid, huanglonbing, citrus pathosystem.; 8) development of large-scale field experiments in commercial citrus orchards in Florida including ability to coordinate and communicate with experiments with the priorities of commercial grove managers.
