SUMMARY OF POSITION ROLE/RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position will support the Florida Sea Grant program in developing graphics-based products (printed material, web-based content, and video) in support of research, extension, outreach and general communications to a diverse set of stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB AND THE PERCENTAGE OF TIME SPENT ON EACH FUNCTION

Lead the design and creation of graphics for printed materials, websites and multimedia presentations/publications by 1) revising and training on brand guidelines, 2) working with faculty and staff to determine the type of graphics best suited for the project, 3) proposing design layouts and preparing original graphics for placement in electronic (including web pages) and/or printed materials and for use in extension and education projects, and 4) designing printed materials for Sea Grant faculty and staff.

Advise and confer with Florida Sea Grant faculty and staff as to the most effective visual communications for use in projects. Organize product visioning, planning, development and functions with other communications staff; the ability to provide project leadership while working in a team setting is essential. Implement and carry out those projects necessary for communicating through print, web and multimedia.

Help to plan purchases of graphic equipment and software; write bid specifications for print publications and work with vendors to assure completion of deliverables. Work with supervisor(s) to prepare budgets for publications and other communication projects. Administer print-on-demand network for graphics by: 1) maintaining front-end equipment and software, 2) assisting other staff with questions and problems, 3) investigating and integrating new technologies into workflow, and 4) archiving information for future use.

Assist in setting up and directing photo/video sessions for projects. Maintain graphic files and archive as appropriate. Assist in setting up displays at offsite locations.

Perform other duties as assigned

WORK SCHEDULE

Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Additional time may be required in order for deadlines to be met. Travel may be required for training, professional development, meetings with off-campus faculty and special events.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POSITION

Work is primarily performed in an indoor, climate-controlled environment and is nearly absent from disagreeable elements (e.g., extreme noise, heat, odors, heights and/or dust). There is little or no risk related to physical and/or mental health and safety associated with this position. Walking, sitting, hearing, seeing up close, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions. Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.

Employee must be able to communicate easily, be highly creative, organized and self- directed, be able to plan and carry out work initiatives, personally, and be capable of advising/contributing thoughtfully and meaningfully to program leadership and mission with minimal instruction and direction. Must be responsive to staff and faculty needs. Must be confident in making decisions. A summary of required characteristics of the successful applicant include:

  • Knowledge of marketing and communications applying graphic design principles
  • Ability to distinguish colors
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including grammar and editing
  • Good understanding of typesetting and copyediting, and intermediate knowledge of commercial printing

POLICY MAKING AND/OR INTERPRETATION.

Responsible for making sure University standards are followed in terms of branding and content in printed and electronic publications.

PROGRAM DIRECTION AND DEVELOPMENT.

Responsible for creating and delivering products for the Florida Sea Grant College Program with complementary visions to match core content.

COMMUNICATION

Essential to this position. Employee will experience frequent (30-50 times a day) contact with internal and external audiences. Internal contacts are with Sea Grant faculty, administration and staff and with other University units, especially UF/IFAS Communications Services. External contacts include professional organizations, stakeholder associations, legislative offices and third-party vendors.

MONETARY RESPONSIBILITY.

Utilize P-Card to purchase supplies. Employee required to code all transactions and submit all receipts. A spending limit will be established and misuse would result in disciplinary action. Employee is also responsible for providing printing and production costs, and for helping to plan for purchases of graphic equipment and software; must also be able to write bid specifications for print publications and work with vendors to assure completion of the project.

CREATIVITY, STRATEGY AND LEADERSHIP.

This position requires creativity and the ability to communicate visually. Keeping up on current trends and using the most effective marketing plan is crucial to the success of a program. Ability to visually interpret complex data/science into illustrations and layouts for the general public to understand is expected. Providing leadership in the development and execution of design-based communications is expected.

Expected Salary:

$50,000 - 60,000

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in an appropriate area; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Five years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated innovation in design and implementation, communicating artistic themes in a variety of media
  • Demonstrated ability to procure supplemental design support to augment core funding
  • Experience in managing a small team
  • Experience in designing products with a coastal and ocean focus
  • Experience in communicating to diverse audiences
  • Experience with advanced data visualizations
  • Experience in developing a strategic communications plan
