A shared position is available in the Insects and Public health Lab under the supervision of Dr. Estelle Martin and the Medical and Veterinary Entomology Lab under the supervision of Dr. Edwin Burgess.
We are looking for a candidate to conduct supervised research 1) studying mosquito-pathogen interactions and 2) developing new control technologies in house flies and ticks. The candidate will be expected to perform daily insect husbandry activities, focusing on Aedes and Culex mosquitoes as well as house flies and lone star ticks. The candidate will perform mostly laboratory work and should be proficient with basic laboratory techniques including molecular biology skills: DNA / RNA extractions, PCR, qRT-PCR, gel electrophoresis, and aseptic cell tissue culture techniques. Some field work may be expected depending on future projects. In addition, the candidate will conduct routine topical, feeding, and bottle dose-response assays. Data entry and responsible data management are also expected, and the candidate will oversee some administrative duties including ordering supplies, maintaining and calibrating research equipment, keeping chemicals inventory, and autoclaving biohazardous material. In the Insects and Public health Lab, the candidate will ensure the training and compliance of all laboratory personnel with UF safety regulations for all research projects.
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic team member with excellent organizational and communication skills. The candidate should be able to lift 20 pounds, must be punctual, reliable, and able to work irregular hours and weekends when necessary.
$12-$15 per hour
Bachelor’s degree in entomology, molecular biology, or related degree.
Proficient with basic computer programs such as: MS Word, Excel and email
Valid U.S. driver’s license
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Master’s degree with more than 6 months experience preferred.
Experience working with next-generation sequencing, and with statistical or geospatial tools (R / ArcGIS / QGIS) is desired but not mandatory.
Experience rearing insects
Experience working with infected mosquitoes.
Experience working with pesticides would be preferable but not mandatory.
