Join the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) as an Industrial Controls Technician I, where you’ll be part of a supportive, mission-driven team dedicated to maintaining the systems that power research, teaching, and extension.

As a member of the Facilities Planning and Operations (FPO) team, you’ll work in a collaborative environment where your expertise in HVAC and building automation systems plays a critical role in ensuring reliable, safe, and energy-efficient facility operations. What You’ll Do:
In this role, you will work with a wide range of mechanical and electronic systems including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), pneumatic and digital sensors, actuators, and other components of Building Automation Systems (BAS). Your work helps prevent downtime, promotes comfort and safety, and supports the essential work of UF/IFAS across its campus facilities.

Key Responsibilities:
• System Maintenance & Troubleshooting 
Install, maintain, and troubleshoot industrial control systems, including PLCs, VFDs, and BAS. Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and software issues to restore functionality. Collaborate with team members to minimize downtime and ensure facility safety. Maintain up-to-date system logs and documentation.

• Routine Testing & Inspections 
Conduct scheduled system checks and component tests. Document findings, perform calibrations or replacements as needed, and ensure ongoing reliability. Work with your supervisor to prioritize tasks based on urgency and available resources.

• Installations & Upgrades 
Assist with the installation of new systems and updates to existing equipment. Read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics. Ensure all work complies with local codes and UF/IFAS standards. Coordinate with contractors and vendors as necessary.

• Safety & Compliance 
Uphold UF’s safety protocols at all times, including proper use of PPE and lockout/tagout procedures. Participate in team safety trainings and contribute to ongoing safety reviews. Promptly report any hazards or incidents.

• Other Duties 
Support project documentation, track work orders, and assist with budget ledger entries. Use digital tools and systems to complete and manage daily tasks. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Two or more years of experience with HVAC controls, automation systems, or industrial control systems
• Familiarity with Building Automation Systems such as Siemens, Trane, or Johnson Controls
• Skilled in troubleshooting and repairing VFDs, sensors, actuators, and controllers
• Proficiency in interpreting wiring diagrams, control schematics, and technical documentation
• Strong computer skills for interfacing with BAS and managing work orders
• Knowledge of control theory, sequence of operations, and HVAC diagnostics
• Strong communication skills and a safety-focused, team-oriented mindset

Expected Salary:

$26/hr - $31/hr

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and four years of HVAC, Chiller, and/or Electrical Experience.

Preferred
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of working on building automation systems.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures required in maintenance and repair, and minor construction.
  • Proficiency in reading control schematics and technical manuals, including the ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical documentation
  • Ability to work independently, with limited supervisor and as part of a team. Follow verbal and written instructions. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Strong computer skills for interfacing with control systems and completing work orders
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing VFDs, sensors, actuators, and controllers
  • Understanding of control theory, sequence of operations, and logic programming
  • Ability to keep accurate records.
  • Knowledge of HVAC Controls and troubleshooting.
  • Strong experience in HVAC system diagnostics and BAS programming
  • Familiarity with commercial or institutional facility environments
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Commitment to safety and operational reliability
