University of Florida Department of Recreational Sports
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for Safety Instructors to join our energetic team and move Gators toward lifelong wellbeing! The Recreational Sports Safety Instructor position is responsible for instructing safety courses on standards set by the American Red Cross.
RecSports Team Members Responsibilities
- Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants, and guests.
- Uphold and exceed the expectations of the Cornerstones of RecSports Service: accountability, anticipating needs, attitude, and atmosphere.
- Demonstrate a desire to learn and apply knowledge as a RecSports ambassador.
- Take ownership of RecSports facilities and programs by exhibiting a responsible work ethic.
- Promote and maintain cleanliness and appearance within and surrounding RecSports facilities.
- Enforce RecSports policies and procedures to promote participant safety and satisfaction.
- Respond to all emergency situations and adhere to established protocol including pre- and post- incident procedures.
- All RecSports employees are expected to abide by the RecSports Student Staff Code of Conduct process that clarifies shared expectations and standards in effort to best serve our patrons, develop each team member, and prepare student employees for future career endeavors.
RecSports Fall Kick-Off 2025: Tuesday, August 19
- Fall Kick-Off is our all-staff event to discuss department-wide updates, facilitate unit training sessions, as well as cultivate community and positive energy within our RecSports team. All RecSports Student Staff are expected to attend and will be paid for their training time.
- Fall Kick-Off is scheduled for August 19, 2025. Please mark your calendars as this is mandatory for all-staff! In addition, please hold your calendars for August 15-20, 2025 for mandatory unit-specific trainings.
Unit Specific Job Responsibilities
- Teach all course materials to the standards set forth by the American Red Cross by following the Instructor Manual, while observing the set safety measures and guidelines.
- Arrive before the start of class, as scheduled, to collect supplies and prepare for class
- Dress professionally and act responsibly.
- Provide a safe and welcoming environment, conducive to a productive learning environment
- Use a variety of learning tactics to provide a learning opportunity for all participants
- Be available to answer participant questions, demonstrate skills, and provide global and individual feedback
- Clean and disinfect all supplies after use and return to appropriate storage location
- Complete Safety Course Shift reports at the conclusion of each course, noting any issues with equipment, supplies, technology, and/or participants.
- Attend mandatory meetings and/or trainings.
- Enforce RecSports policies and procedures being courteous and helpful to individual students and classes.
- Maintain an acceptable level of knowledge through a personal commitment to learning new information, instructional techniques, and updating/obtaining new certifications.
- Participate in the facilitation of the Safety Audit program and in-service trainings, as needed.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Aquatics & Risk Management Administrative Team

Expected Salary: |
$16/hour

Minimum Requirements: |
This position is open to all students who are eligible to work on campus and will be employed through student Other Personnel Services (OPS) and must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Registered students are employed on a part-time basis, up to 20 hours per week.

- University of Florida student
- Contribute 3-5 hours/month, dependent up on course schedule (evening and weekend hours)
- Required: Current American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
- Current American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor Certification or willing to obtain by start date
- Must demonstrate a basic understanding of effective instruction strategies and tools
- Complete and maintain UF online certifications in GET803, OOC101, PRV802, ITT102, GET811
