Serves as primary contact for the service with clients, referring veterinarians, laboratories and business offices as well as hospital clinicians and staff to provide accurate and timely information regarding sample submissions and processing. Ensures that all submissions to the necropsy service are properly documented and tracked. Works with the outside cremation service to ensure accurate and timely return of remains. Ensures proper processing and tracking of submission of samples to outside laboratories for ancillary testing.
Serves as working manager by actively participating and performing lab services on a regular basis, for to maintain the necropsy laboratory spaces, participating in necropsy cases, timely disposal and cremation services. Ensures the cleanliness and safety of the necropsy floor, storeroom, loading dock, and trim room.
Maintains medical laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair. Responsible for maintaining digital image archive of photographs for anatomic pathology services.
Maintains laboratory staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees. Maintains laboratory productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas; identifying peak and slack periods; making operational or staffing adjustment. Ensures that staff complete checklists for required activities.
Coordinates orientation of students on rotation through the necropsy service which includes but is not limited to tour of facilities, short course on safety, distribution of protocols and policies. May be required to assist in securing outside specimens for teaching.
Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
Furnishes input for budget planning and participates in budget monitoring/management. Participates in the laboratories quality assurance program; adjusting policy and procedures; generating reports; maintaining records. Follows all written work instructions as approved by the QA/QC program in compliance with AAVLD guidelines.
