Job Description:

In collaboration with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the University of Florida’s Tropical Conservation and Development Program (TCD) located in the Center for Latin American Studies seeks a post-doctoral associate to join our team to develop and execute a 1yr, 9-month project (ending September 2026) to advance Amazonian-Andes conservation thinking and action. Leveraging deep field partnerships cultivated over decades by both Moore Foundation and TCD, TCD will realize a series of interconnected iterative convenings of diverse key actors committed to Amazonian conservation that enables: 1) the exchange and dissemination of lessons learned in developing and implementing conservation strategies; and 2) the invigoration of existing networks and catalysis of new cross-generational coalitions to advance thinking and action for enduring Amazonian conservation.

Essential Functions:

1) Assist day-to-day project management for the development, facilitation, and analysis of 5 thematic workshops to be conducted throughout the Amazon region.

  • Engage with relevant Amazonian-Andes actors and organizations, working closely with the UF project team and pairs of thematic leaders dedicated to each workshop.
  • Create and curate internal project communications between thematic groups and the UF project team.
  • Assist in organization and facilitation of the 5 workshops, with support from 5 thematic graduate student researchers.
  • Lead systematic documentation that captures learning (content and processes) from each workshop.
  • Support local communication specialists to develop and share appropriate products that publicize content and processes of each workshop to diverse audiences.
  • With the UF project team, support cross-workshop comparisons, analyses, and project synthesis.

2) Support design, organization, and execution of a 3- to 4-day Gainesville Summit in February 2026.

  • With the UF project team, assist with design and facilitation of the Summit events to include information exchange, network building, strategy sharing, and complementary intensive short courses.
  • With the UF project team, a project assistant, and graduate students, organize logistics, invitations, and reception of Summit participants.
  • With the UF project team and graduate students, capture and document Summit learning.

3) With UF project team and others, support the publication of project findings, processes, and promising pathways forward via special journal issues, a project website, videos, WhatsApp and/or other media.

Background information:

Tropical Conservation and Development (TCD) Program’s mission is to bridge theory and practice to advance biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource use, and human well-being in the tropics and elsewhere. TCD is a research and training program of the Center for Latin American Studies and offers an interdisciplinary graduate certificate designed to complement the knowledge and skill sets that students develop in their home units. For more than 30 years, the TCD program has contributed to empowering the next generation of conservation and development professionals, researchers, educators, and policy leaders to advance shared goals. The TCD network of students, faculty, and more than 400 alumni and other partners embraces active learning and participatory research approaches that engage a range of actors from scholars/scientists to local communities to governmental and non-governmental professionals in critical discussion, collaboration, and knowledge and skills sharing.

Expected Salary:

$65,000

Minimum Requirements:

This position requires a PhD degree in interdisciplinary ecology, environmental anthropology, forest sciences, conservation science, developmental economics, or a field relevant to the position.

The candidate needs to have demonstrated scholarly expertise and experience in Amazonian conservation and development. Candidates are required to have fluency in English, fluency in Portuguese and/or Spanish.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates should have demonstrated ability to organize academics and practitioners to achieve stated goals, including experience in organizing and facilitating workshops, communication and social media skills, and evidence of translating research into academic publications and other products.

Native fluency in Portuguese is strongly desired.
