Job Description:

Prepare for an perform UF laboratory inspections in accordance with the requirements of UF policy and federal and state guidance regulation, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and State of Florida Departments of Health and Agriculture.  Must be able to operate a state vehicle to and from inspection sites.

Review projects involving biohazards submitted to the Biosafety Office and/or Institutional Biosafety Committee. Conduct risk assessments and make recommendations for containment and safe practices of research in accordance with the requirements of the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acids, the CDC/NIH  I   “Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories” (BMBL), federal, state, and local requirements, and UF policy.

Assists the UF and teaching community by providing written/spoken advice regarding issues, such as, regulatory compliance, technical issues, development and use of SOPs, training, and risk assessment.  Other projects as assigned according to the needs of the department.

Work hours: Monday through Friday, 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM
- Occasional travel to offsite laboratories
 
A criminal background and post-offer health assessment will be conducted.

Commensurate with education and experience 

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and one year of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

EDUCATION & TRAINING: Advanced degree (M.S. or (PhD)  in a relevant field of study (microbiology, public health, molecular biology, etc.)

 EXPERIENCE: Experience working in a research laboratory. KNOWLEDGE: None noted

SKILLS: None noted

 ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing)
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments
  • Ability to fully, logically, and concisely explain safety issues to clients (laboratory staff members)

 PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to wear any required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection.  Post offer and annual health assessments.
