Job Description:

This position will serve in the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) manufacturing instructional labs. Primary responsibilities will include instructing students and faculty about the safe use of the manufacturing tools, establishing a safe operating environment through implementation of a comprehensive safety program, monitoring the lab to ensure safe operation of the manufacturing tools, keeping manufacturing tools in good working condition, and ensuring an inclusive environment for all individuals participating in lab activities.

Be Safety Coordinator. Develop and maintain a comprehensive safety program that includes safe operation of the lab and manufacturing tools, relying on established programs, standards, and consults with the faculty while doing so. Maintaining compliance with UF EH&S and other departmental, college, and institutional safety regulations. Run ongoing training program for students and faculty to ensure safety in the lab and the safe operation of the manufacturing tools. Trained students and/or faculty should then be able to train others to do the same.

Manage activities in the manufacturing lab space. Monitor the lab to ensure safe operation of the manufacturing tools. Assist with direct instruction of students using manufacturing tools. Assist with indirect instruction using lab assistants.

Manage the manufacturing tools. Stay abreast of new, emerging manufacturing technologies, such as additive manufacturing and its associated machinery and methods. Make recommendations of new equipment to purchase. Maintain the manufacturing tools and the lab in good, clean, safe, and optimal working order. Responsible for purchasing safeguards, maintenance/cleaning supplies, manufacturing tool replacement parts, consumable cutting tools and the like.

Develop and maintain a diversity, equity, and inclusion program that ensures an inclusive lab environment for a diverse student and faculty population and consult with faculty while doing so. Promote and foster a collaborative, welcoming, and inclusive lab environment.

Support informal student/faculty design inquiries. Identify challenging manufacturing implications of a student/faculty proposed design. Suggest improvements and guide the safe, effective manufacturing of the design using the manufacturing tools available.

Other assigned duties.

Expected Salary:

$55,000 - $60,000; commensurate with qualifications and experience

Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma or equivalent and four years of relevant experience; or Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area.

Preferred Qualifications:

Engineering Technology Associate in Science degree, Advanced Manufacturing Certificate, or similar college level degree or certification.

Demonstrated prior industrial and/or instructional experience with manufacturing equipment and related processes in a machine shop, laboratory, or hands-on educational setting.

Demonstrated experience in coaching, training, or teaching.

Demonstrated experience in machine shop safety.

Demonstrated experience in working with diverse populations in an academic/lab setting and fostering an inclusive environment for all participants.

Demonstrated efforts to stay up to date in the manufacturing world.

Experienced in reading detailed part drawings and handling solid-model part and assembly files.

Experience using common CAD packages, including SolidWorks, and other CAD/CAM programs.

Well versed in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
