Job Description:

An exciting opportunity exists for a biological scientist to be part of the Tissue chips in Space program funded by the National Center for Advancement Translational Sciences (NCATS). This position seeks a highly organized, multitasker to contribute toward ongoing technical and logistical aspects critical to validate a microfluidic skeletal muscle tissue chip for disease modeling and drug efficacy testing and to implement the tissue chips into a CubeLab for the lab’s second launch to the International Space Station in 2022. The position is in the Department of Pharmacodynamics in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Florida. The department invites applications for a full-time, staff position in a cellular pharmacology laboratory.

Duties include:

  • Manage production of PDMS chips and cell stocks for tissue chip drug testing including: Fabricate and produce polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) tissue chips from exiting molds and established protocols; Purify and expand cell stocks derived from donor muscle cells (partnership with AdventHealth) for a certain cell type (CD56+, CD90, etc) and confirm by flow cytometry.
  • Work with the MPS-Db through the University of Pittsburg to deposit data from muscle tissue chips, generate templates from baseline datasets (without drug concentration) and establish workflow to collect future data sets (with drug concentrations) as well as analyze and visualize datasets including: Work closely with Research faculty to organize results from pharmacological and physiological experiments that may be used to feed data-rich templates into the microphysiological systems database (MPS-Db); Contribute toward establishing a chronic compound testing workflow in the tissue chips
  • Manage timelines and experimental protocols for biological verification testing with implementation partner hardware. Coordinate lab resources for testing that may take place in Gainesville, Orlando or at Kennedy Space Center including: Coordinate with implementation engineers and assist in organizing logistics to implement our MPS system with payload hardware for space flight in mid-2022.
Expected Salary:

$45,000-$55,000; commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Cell culture experience working with primary cells preferred.  Knowledge of scientific databases and data visualization tools are a plus.
