Job Description:

Research-
The Biological Scientist will assist laboratory staff in the conduct of research under the supervision of postdocs, senior graduate students, or the principal investigator, as appropriate. Research will include work with human and animal tissue culture cell lines and bacterial strains, including the human pathogens Shigella and Chlamydia. Maintenance of tissue culture cell lines and preparation of tissue culture media is an essential task. Animal work is not part of the research plan but may be in the future. Techniques employed are microbiology and molecular biology based. Due to the dynamic nature of the work performed by this laboratory, additional tasks may be required such as the development of novel technologies and methods.

Laboratory Administration-
This individual will serve as the manager of the laboratory. Their overall responsibility is to maintain proper function and organization of the laboratory including, but not limited to, the following duties: ordering (and tracking receipt of) supplies, ensuring maintenance/calibration of laboratory equipment, organizing SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), assuring regulatory compliance, and updating records. The individual will be responsible for the safe shipping of biological specimens according to CDC, USDA, or other agencies’ regulations, as appropriate. Other daily duties include preparation of media, chemical reagents and solutions, cleaning and autoclaving glassware, and ensuring overall laboratory cleanliness and the proper overall functioning of the laboratory.

Technical Writing and Regulatory Compliance-
All work is performed using good scientific laboratory practices. Thus, preparation of detailed and accurate notebooks and records is essential. The preparation, revision, and maintenance of University of Florida IACUC and IRB protocols, as needed, are part of this job. Assistance with the preparation (writing) of manuscripts and grant proposals are essential tasks. Safety related tasks including maintenance of MSDSs(Material Safety Data Sheets), yearly EH&S inspections, and monthly safety self-audits are also part of the position responsibilities.

Training of lab personnel-
Will be directly involved in training graduate and undergraduate researchers in the laboratory on research methods, lab safety, SOPs.

Expected Salary:

$37,500 - $50,000 annually, negotiable, commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience ;or a Master's degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Successful candidates will have technical skill and laboratory experience in the following: basic microbiology techniques, cell culture (primary cells and cell lines), basic molecular biology techniques, RNA/DNA/protein isolation, gene expression, western blots, etc. A master’s degree or bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, or molecular biology or a closely related field preferred.
