This position is in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Small Animal Clinical Sciences. The Biological Scientist will report to Dr. Chen Gilor, principal investigator. The purpose of this position is to 1. assist in original research studies evaluating aspects of pancreatic and gastrointestinal physiology and pathophysiology, primarily studying the gut-pancreas relationships as they pertain to diabetes mellitus and obesity, and 2. provide support for clinical veterinary diabetes and obesity research in dogs and cats. Duties will be focused on 1. In-vivo studies in cats and dogs requiring handling and physical restrain, sample collection (including venipuncture, cystocentesis, etc.), catheterization, calculating fluid rates and other techniques; 2. Learning and then performing histological procedures (morphologic and immunocytochemical studies), ELISA, immunoblot blot analysis, PCR and other laboratory techniques. This work requires willingness and ability to learn, initiative, attention to detail and determination in all tasks. Time management, organization skills, the ability to multi-task and team-work are necessary. The individual will be expected to execute experiments and work independently. Experience with IACUC, CRCC, EH&S, and GLP policies will be needed. The individual will comply with all safety and regulatory requirements to assure the safe and proper functioning of the laboratory.

This Advanced Animal Care Technician I (AACT1) requires the ability to perform specialized duties in the areas of biocontainment, biosecurity and animal husbandry within several areas of high level containment. Under strict guidelines from USDA and /or CDC, UF EH&S and ACS SOP’s the person in this position performs specialized husbandry procedures, will acquire and maintain qualifications to work with ABSL2 and ABSL3 designated protocols and will perform technical support for all levels of containment. You will be required to be vaccinated to work with these animals as many agents are zoonotic. Employee will be registered with the CDC or APHIS for access to select agents. Personnel will be following strict guidelines under the National Select Agent Program (NSAP). Individual must be able to clear DOJ/FBI background checks. This individual will be a part of the ACS and UF/EH&S Biosafety security and incident response plans.
