Job Description:

Employee is expected to be able to multi-task at a high level by performing research and diagnostic work related to veterinary forensic pathology while supporting all aspects of laboratory function.

Forensic Research and Diagnostic Work includes:
-Knowledge about pathology, veterinary medicine or forensic science
-Assist with performing forensic necropsy examinations and tissue trimming
-Assist with preparation and clean up related to the forensic necropsy.
-Knowledge about cytology and histology including immunohistochemistry as these pertain to diagnostic medicine.

-Development of tests and controls for use with tests under direction of PI; performing tests with appropriate controls
-Perform diagnostic testing (PCR, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry)
-Follows sampling plans for collection of samples
-Compile data; use statistical models for the analysis of data
-Maintain computer databases; use publicly accessible, commercial, or proprietary databases
-Liaise with outside labs to complete tasks

Laboratory Organization and Maintenance Work includes:

-Support essential pathology-related laboratory activities by active participation in laboratory development.
-Teaching laboratory/research related protocols and topics to veterinary, post-doctoral, graduate and undergraduate students.
-Serving as a liaison to other laboratories in support of the research collaborations of the laboratory.
-In collaboration with PI, responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and modifying existing laboratory procedures, including writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
-Tracking supply use by project and maintaining adequate inventory to perform laboratory research, including purchasing and receiving supplies for the laboratory.
-Prepare reagents for studies and analysis, maintains laboratory equipment, and reports facility issues to the appropriate individuals.
-Researches new equipment for purchase, obtains quotes, liaises with sales representatives, and receives, sets up, and maintains new equipment.
-Schedules equipment maintenance and repairs.
-Maintains chain of custody forms, freezer logs, and inventories
-Maintains laboratory financial records related to the acquisition of materials, reagents, and equipment, invoices and processes payments, and will keep the Primary Investigator (PI) informed of the laboratory’s financial position.
-Ensures laboratory, chemical, and biological safety compliance within the lab
-Participates in quality program for the laboratory, ensures good lab practices are implemented, and delivers timely work at a high standard to all who utilize the laboratory.
-Liaise with users of the laboratory and their collaborators, and anyone interacting with the laboratory.

-Other duties as defined by supervisor

Advertised Salary:

$33,000 - $37,000 annually

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree with course credits in the physical or natural sciences; or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications and experience include:

-Demonstrates knowledge of veterinary or human medicine, pathology, or forensic science;
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-A bachelor’s degree in animal science, forensic science, biology, chemistry, or related field, AND one year of laboratory experience referable to the desired qualifications of the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

-A master’s degree in animal science, forensic science, biology, chemistry or related field
-Laboratory, chemical, and biological safety
-Aseptic technique
-Proper use of a light microscope
-Diagnostic test development
-Experience with Quality Program Standards and Good Laboratory Practices
-Cytology, histology, and immunohistochemistry
-Experience with UV-VIS Spectrophotometer
-Performance of PCR based testing

 Highly preferred qualifications include:
-Forensic investigation experience (human or veterinary forensics)
