Job Description:

The University of Florida Department of Community Health and Family Medicine, is seeking a Clinical Coder 1, who will be responsible for all charge activity for all Family Medicine Hospital providers. The key role will be to optimize billing performance in compliance with all University of Florida, College of Medicine, State and Federal guidelines. The position will participate in educational seminars/programs to ensure current coding practices. For the 20 + divisions in the department of Community Health and Family Medicine.

Chart Review: Perform clinic chart reviews to provide results to the department compliance educator to provide education on coding and documentation improvement. Assist in education to physician, ARNP’s, PA’s and staff in regards to documentation, reimbursement, and compliance. Assist in providing feedback to providers regarding billing and coding questions and works with provider to resolve these questions to ensure accurate coding.

Education and Coding Compliance: Researches coding issues through all available resources, including but not limited to professional associations, federal and private payer guidelines, and coding networks. Keeps abreast of annual coding updates. Provides education to providers in regards to documentation, reimbursement, and compliance. Provides feedback to provider regarding billing and coding questions and works with provider to resolve these questions to ensure accurate coding.

Reimbursement Review: Reviews hospital reimbursement reports and track payments/denials for coding issues and provider education. Review charge entry edits and payor denials to provide education to faculty and staff.

Validate and track admission to ensure that all charges are captured for all Hospital admissions.

Other: Other duties as assigned by supervisor 5%

Advertised Salary:

The salary range is between $15.25 and $18.25 per hour, and is commensurate with skills, experience, and certification.

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Coding certification and one year of appropriate experience
  • CPC-A minimum
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required to effectively work as a liaison with all individuals contacted during the course of work
  • Analytical skills developed through formal education or on the job training with a medical practice or other health care organization
  • Demonstrated competence with personal computer or other computer system
  • Proficiency in data entry
  • Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology
  • Must be knowledgeable of College of Medicine, Community Health & Family Medicine, Billing Compliance Plan, Documentation, and Coding Guidelines for Outpatient and Physician Hospital Services
  • Must possess skills to research coding issues through all available resources, including but not limited to professional associations, federal and private payor guidelines, and coding networks
Special Instructions to Applicants:

Be able to work independently.

Morning meetings with supervisor to receive direction as needed.

Work daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm, total hours per week: 40, with periodic overtime based on workload. This position is considered essential staff.

Able to attend occasional 7:00 am meetings

Ability to sit for extended periods of time.

Able to transport himself/herself to various training activities and meetings.

This is a time-limited position. An appointment to a position funded by contract and grant, auxiliaries, or local funds, as appropriate, for a particular project, enterprise, or specified period. Such designation must be made to the position at the time of recruitment. A time-limited position shall have the same rights as a position with a regular appointment modifier, except such position shall not have rights provided for layoff, or recall.
