Biological Scientist III

Job Description:

The Conesa Lab in the Microbiology & Cell Science Department at the University of Florida is looking for a Biological Scientist III.  The position requires the following duties and functions:

The applicant will oversee basic science in cell differentiation systems and related experimental procedures. Under limited supervision, the applicant will independently develop methods to isolate and maintain primary cultures of progenitor or stem cells and implement treatment procedures to differentiate these into terminally differentiated cell types.  In particular, the applicant will design and implement protocols for the differentiation of mouse neural progenitors into oligodendrocytes or motoneurons, including isolation and establishment of primary cell lines from animal tissues, maintenance and cryostorage of cell lines, and laboratory methods to characterize cells and their surface markers.

Applicant must have experience in laboratory management and have the required training and certifications to work with laboratory animals. The applicant must have demonstrated success with cell differentiation systems, including the ability to review current scientific literature and design new treatment systems based on the latest advancements.  Applicant must be able to independently plan and execute projects that involve the culture of multiple cell lines in parallel for complex experiments. Extensive knowledge and previous experience with tissue culture, animal models and experimental use of research animals will be critical to perform the necessary studies in the area of molecular and cellular physiology. Moreover, the applicant must have experience with multi-color flow cytometry panel design and subsequent flow cytometric analyses and sorting of cell populations.

Additionally, applicant must be able to perform routine molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid isolation, cloning, protein identification, construction of sequencing libraries. Applicant will need to be a team player that effectively interacts with UF ICBR services to design, plan, and execute experiments. Applicant will dedicate 15% of his time to lab maintenance and safety related activities. The applicant will track lab expenditures and work with Finance to manage laboratory funds.
