Job Description:

Supervision and Leadership

Responsible for development, direction of policies and procedures and responsible for personnel management within the department for the Facilities Services HSC Maintenance Department. May function as the Director in his/her absence as required. Serves as principle advisor to the Director of Operations, covering methods and procedures for maintenance and repair of all HSC E&G buildings. Coordinates all maintenance and repair of building envelopes, and mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems. Oversee the proper maintenance of all building's mechanical, electrical, and control systems. This includes developing schedules for periodic maintenance and ensuring the cost effectiveness and efficiency of facilities operations, including maintenance and repair versus replacement decisions.

Daily Operations

Develop and communicate work priorities, administer training programs and staffing requirements. Investigate and initiate disciplinary action when necessary within University guidelines. Formally and informally review and evaluate employee performance as it relates to quality of work, attendance, attitude and conduct. Manages the quality of work conducted by frequent inspections and review of procedures. Evaluates condition of buildings and recommends and initiates work orders.  Develops and implements job and work standards, inspection procedures for workmanship, performance productivity and safety.  Develops and implements procedures for administrative and supervisory tasks involved in personnel counseling, timekeeping, material and job records.

Financial Oversight

Develop and prepare the annual preliminary budget for maintenance and operations activities, and other assigned programs; monitor and control budget expenditures; direct the preparation and maintenance of detailed and comprehensive reports, records and files regarding programs, operations and activities.


Contracts work as necessary to accomplish maintenance priorities. Identify, prioritize, approve scope of work, and tracks deferred maintenance and projects. Works with UF Purchasing to develop and negotiate maintenance and repair contracts. Works with PD&C with managing minor projects, input into Capital Projects, and reviews Design and Construction Standards.

A criminal background will be conducted.

The typical work schedule is Monday – Friday 8:00AM – 5:00PM. The incumbent is expected to be periodically available during off hours to perform campus visits for special events and all campus emergencies. The incumbent will periodically travel to conferences and meetings, representing Facilities Services.

Commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Evidence of navigating a complex organization, preferably in a large university setting, with an ability to work with administrators, faculty, and students.  

Proven track record of developing and implementing a preventive maintenance program and operational plans with record of successful execution.

Ability to organize and delegate work so as to control a variety of programs simultaneously and the adaptability to cope with changing facilities standards and requirements.

Demonstrated record of building a strong customer service culture with metrics and objectives in a facilities function.

Demonstrated leadership skills within a changing environment. Proven track record of managing teams, processes and projects. Demonstrated track record of hiring, managing and mentoring staff members. This involves holding people accountable, resolving conflicts, active participation in annual performance evaluations and providing professional development opportunities.
