This is a 12-month tenure-accruing position that will be 70% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 30% extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service) and available at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Tenure will accrue in the Soil and Water Sciences Department (SWSD). The position offers opportunities to pursue research and extension activities in urban landscape nutrient management and remediation, and research opportunities in the area of emerging contaminants in urban landscape environments. This position is responsible for providing leadership for research program development and involvement in statewide educational programs for landscape management professionals and expected to interact closely with county and multi-county extension horticulture agents working with residential and commercial landscape professionals as well as the newly created regional specialized water agents. Research and extension publications and demonstrations are important outputs of this position.
The primary research responsibilities are related directly to soil-plant-water relationships for residential and commercial landscape management practices. The incumbent will develop a nationally recognized externally funded research program to understand the physical, biogeochemical, and ecological processes and mechanisms controlling the fate and transport of organic and inorganic pollutants within urban landscapes to prevent water quality deterioration, as related to human and natural systems health. Excellent opportunities exist to develop other collaborative programs related to urban landscape management ecology. This position is within the Center for Landscape Conservation and Ecology (CLCE) in IFAS. As such, this faculty member will work in partnership with other faculty members in CLCE and with stakeholders on urban water quality issues. The individual will work closely with the Center for Landscape Ecology and Conservation faculty, colleagues in Gainesville other Research and Education Centers to develop a competitive research program. The faculty member will actively participate in graduate education by chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and publishing the results with their graduate students. The incumbent will have opportunities to participate in the distance education graduate program in the SWSD. Implementation of the Affirmative Action program of the University of Florida is required.

The University of Florida's Gulf Coast Research and Education Center (GCREC) is a $16 million regional research center located near Wimauma, southeast of Tampa, FL. Research and extension programs focus on vegetable, strawberry, and environmental horticulture (landscape and flowering ornamentals). In addition the location of the center places it new one of the most populated regions in the state that continues to rapidly urbanize. Excellent facilities including office, laboratory, field and greenhouse space are provided for 20 faculty, support staff and graduate students. A plant diagnostic laboratory aids county extension faculty and local growers in determining disease and nutrition problems and solutions.
A Ph.D. (foreign equivalent acceptable) in soil and water science, environmental horticulture, plant ecology, or a closely related field is required. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication and interpersonal relationships. Candidates are expected to support programs through procurement of extramural funding and must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system with a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.
