Job Description:

The Progressive Care Ward (PCW) is a subset of the Emergency and Critical Care Service, which is VECCS Level I certified and AAHA accredited. Operating daily as a 24-hour ward, the PCW provides supportive patient care for all departments of the small animal services, including orthopedic, neurology, soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology, and oncology. We are comprised of a dedicated staff, including 35 full and part-time ECC technicians. These technicians work in concert with our team of ECC-boarded clinicians, residents, interns, and a bi-monthly rotation of veterinary students. Highlights of this service include a state-of-the-art isolation area and access to the most advanced care available.

Technicians in this service provide continued treatments and care to patients post emergency, pre or post operatively, or to any other patient that needs further dedicated care in ensuring their recovery. This position offers an excellent opportunity to utilize the skills and knowledge you have acquired from your previous experiences, as well as the chance to learn advanced technical skills and broaden your emergency and critical care knowledge. By working side-by-side with the Intensive Care Unit, PCW staff have the added opportunity to explore that service in greater depth, benefiting those considering specialization.

Candidates should:

  • Be flexible and able to work weekends
  • Possess a positive professional attitude in dealing with all the individuals encountered in an ECC setting
  • Have a working knowledge of patient care and critical care medicine
  • Can perform advanced nursing techniques
  • Are capable of independent thinking
  • Are able to accurately assess patient condition
  • Are able to recognize a need and initiate medical intervention in emergency conditions
  • Present a willingness to be a team player and take work direction from others
  • Are able to communicate effectively with peers, students, clinicians, and clients
  • Possess the ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines while working in a potentially busy, stressful environment

This position requires a post offer health assessment and criminal background check.

Multiple position openings are available. The following schedules need to be filled:

  • Friday – Monday, 1pm – 11pm and some holidays
  • Monday - Thursday, 4pm - 2am and some holidays 
  • Monday - Thursday, 10pm - 8am and some holidays
Advertised Salary:

Commensurate with experience and level of appointment.

Minimum Requirements:

Veterinary Technician I

High school diploma or equivalent and two years of veterinary experience or one year of veterinary experience and currently enrolled in a veterinary technician program or a graduate of a veterinary technician program.

Veterinary Technician II

Credentialed veterinary technician and four years of veterinary experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited veterinary technology program and/or certified veterinary technician 
  • Knowledge of animal care and nursing 
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and terminology
  • Knowledge of the equipment and materials used and their availability and applications 
  • Ability to effectively maintain a working environment while in stressful situations 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees of various levels and responsibilities 
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with clinicians, coworkers, students, and clients
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude at work 
  • Ability to accept willingly constructive criticism from senior staff and clinicians 
  • Ability to lift a minimum of fifty pounds 
  • Ability to bend, kneel, pull, push, twist, and stand for extended periods
