Job Description:

This is a 12-month tenure-accruing Assistant or Associate Professor position that has a 70% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 30% extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service) appointment, located at the Marianna campus of the UF/IFAS North Florida Research and Education Center (NFREC), Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, of the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Tenure will accrue in the Animal Sciences Department. The successful candidate's research will focus on beef cattle reproductive physiology, however genetics/genomics or immunology would also be considered. The successful candidate will function as part of the NFREC Beef/Forage team that includes scientists working in forage breeding, soil nutrient management, forage management and animal nutrition.


Through Extension the incumbent will contribute to county extension efforts involving reproductive methods and general cattle management through in service training, field days, the NFREC Ecosystem Service Training Academy, the Florida Bull Test and other training opportunities. The faculty member will seek contract and grant funding to support research and extension programs.


The successful candidate will participate actively in graduate education by chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis, dissertation and undergraduate research, and publishing research results with students. Faculty are encouraged to participate in professional development activities related to teaching and advising and may teach courses and seminars.


Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas Research, Teaching and Extension, regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.

The North Florida Research & Education Center (NFREC) ( is one of the largest and most diverse off-campus units of UF/IFAS, consisting of campuses in Marianna and Quincy, Florida. There are 14 faculty members stationed in Quincy and 4 faculty members stationed in Marianna. The Marianna campus is a 1,300-acre research and education facility located 50 miles N-NW of Panama City, Florida; 32 miles south of Dothan, Alabama; and 40 miles west of Quincy campus. The Marianna campus houses a 1,000-acre Beef Research Unit with a state-of-the-art Feed Efficiency Unit powered by GrowSafe technology and a beef cattle herd comprised of 300 cows of Angus, Brangus and Braford genetics. The Marianna campus is also the home to the oldest peanut breeding program in the nation. NFREC in Quincy is a 1,000-acre research and education facility located approximately 20 miles west of Tallahassee, Florida. Faculty members commonly use facilities at both campuses. NFREC faculty members represent 10 academic units (forestry, wildlife conservation, environmental horticulture, horticulture, soil and water science, animal science, agronomy, entomology, plant pathology and interdisciplinary ecology). Research programs are collaborative, with a system-based focus on row crop systems, beef/forage production systems, plant breeding, specialty crops, ornamentals and natural resource management. NFREC is characterized by a dynamic population of post-doctoral associates, graduate students, scientific, farm, and administrative staff. This diversity provides a unique setting for transdisciplinary research that ties the NFREC with faculty on the main UF campus, faculty at other Research and Education Centers around the state, as well as state (Florida State University and Florida A&M University) and regional (Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi) universities.

Minimum Requirements:

A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Animal Science or a closely related discipline is required. Candidates must have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability. Candidates must desire to participate in a strong, interdisciplinary team environment at an off-campus Research and Education Center.

Preferred Qualifications:

Postdoctoral experience for the Assistant Professor level is desirable. Practical experience in beef cattle management is also desirable.
