Job Description:

The University of Florida/IFAS and Alachua County seek to fill a 12-month, permanent status-accruing Agriculture and Natural Resources extension agent position. The successful candidate will plan, organize, develop, implement, teach, evaluate, and report on a science-based, well-documented extension program. The agriculture and natural resource agent will focus on pesticide education, row crop and pasture production, natural resource education. This position also includes a small appointment (10%) in 4-H Youth Development in Alachua County.

The agent will be expected to have a working knowledge of agronomic crops and experience with diagnostic skills, best management practices, soils, natural resources, and disease identification and control. The agent will work with other agents, agencies, and groups on cooperative educational efforts designed to produce positive practices with higher impact. The agent is expected to develop or assist with 4-H Youth Development activities as appropriate.

The agent will develop and maintain an advisory committee to assess client needs and program design. The agent will create an annual plan of work and report of accomplishment based on the input of the advisory committee. Additional faculty reports will be required. Candidate will be expected to employ skills in effective organization and record keeping, and to respond to clients in a timely and professional manner. This position requires the agent to work with agencies and organizations to acquire grants, cooperate in interdisciplinary projects, provide service to schools, develop creative works (presentations, posters, website development, etc.), write non-technical people-friendly publications, seek extra-mural funding, and participate in professional societies.

The successful candidate will occasionally assume other responsibilities that benefit the total county extension program as assigned by the County Extension Director and/or the Northeast District Extension Director. The agent will be expected to attain promotion and permanent status according to UF guidelines.

Alachua County is located in north-central Florida along Interstate 75, with a population of approximately 247,000. Alachua County is also home to the University of Florida and Santa Fe College. The main Extension office is located in Gainesville.

Minimum Requirements:

A bachelor's degree is required.  Degrees must be from an accredited university in agronomy, plant science, or a closely related field. Other requirements include excellent communication skills (oral, written and listening), computer and social media competency, ability to organize and motivate people, and good teamwork skills.

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. Candidates should anticipate travel in/out of the county with occasional overnight travel, irregular hours and some nights and weekends. Employment is contingent upon completion of a background check and drug screening test.

Preferred Qualifications:

A master's degree is preferred. A doctoral degree will be considered.  Previous experience in extension or other appropriate community outreach is preferred.  Experience working in multicultural settings and coursework or training on multicultural topics are desirable.
